If you are someone falling under the applicability of TDS deduction, you would probably be required to have knowledge of TAN number or may be considering applying for TAN registration soon, then you will be required to have complete knowledge of TAN requirements and registration process. Please read further to go through for understanding the complete process of TAN registration.
For those unknown, TAN is an acronym for Tax Deduction & Collection Account Number, which is a ten digit alphanumeric unique identification number issued by the Income Tax Department to a TDS deductee, who are responsible to make TDS deductions and submitting such taxes to the Central Government. As per the provisions of section 203A of the Income Tax Act 1961, it is mandatory to obtain TAN registration by eligible TDS deductors and further to mention such unique number in all TDS returns.
As far as the uniqueness of TAN is concerned, each digit of the TAN number denotes different aspects of taxation. First four digits of the TAN number are alphabets while next five are numbers with the last one being an alphabet. Out of which, the first four alphabets provide for the name of city or state of the applicant and the fourth letter provides for the first letter of the applicant’s name.
Thus, it is necessary for a TAN holder to mention TAN registration number in all documents such as TDS/TCS/Annual Information Returns, instalment challans, and certificates. Where TAN number is not mentioned in the above-mentioned documents, the profits documented are not recognized by TAN facilitation authorities and banks in case of payments challans for TDS/TCS payments. However, it is unlawful for an applicant to either obtain or hold more than one TAN registration for same branch. Such applicant may do so, in case of businesses having branches/divisions in India.
As per the provisions of Income Tax, a sole proprietorship business or any other business entity such as a Company, LLP, and Partnership firm etc.) including eligible Non-profit organizations shall deduct tax at source while making payments such as wages or salary, contractor or sub-contractor payments, lease payments crossing Rs. Rs.1, 80,000 annually etc. On making deduction of Tax at source, such registered applicant will issue a TDS certificate confirming collection of tax to be submitted to the Central Government. Nevertheless, salaried individuals are ineligible to obtain TAN registration or to even deduct tax at source.
